How might we encourage everyday charitable givers to give more equitably?
The BGS is a three-year program and collaborative incubator for innovative product concepts and solutions, aimed at creating more equitable outcomes in the charitable giving space. This project has been a beacon for inclusive design practices and prototypes. As a guide for IDEO’s Inclusive Design Collective (IDC), I helped guide both the Gates and IDEO teams through inclusive team building, the creation of sprint-specific-advisory councils to address (and help to usurp) power dynamics present in the space, while dynamically auditing for opportunities for more equity-driven processes and outcomes throughout the entire process.
“Working with Stuart and the IDC was a gamechanger for Better Giving Studio programming. Stuart was phenomenal and the work they did greatly shaped our programming for the better. They helped curate who was at the table for all conversations … But above that, they brought expertise and intentionality into the conversations that sprint participants were having about race and equity. “

We gathered an Advisory team for each sprint of diverse voices to help inform and interrogate our work — centering experiences and wisdom often unheard.

Virtual Collaboration
While our past engagements had been in person, the virtual Co-Lab brought together 15 organizations from across the country, using a Miro playground, interactive “kits” sent to their home that followed the engagement journey with tangible artifacts (including five bucks to give to charity and report back) that helped create community and creative connections throughout the journey.
